What pops into your head when you think of a beach party? Burning sun, scorching sand, waxed boards, cold drinks, snacks on snacks, tasty waves, hot babes, studly dudes, Gidget, or maybe a lil’ Spicoli? Now, what about a sinister demented beach party? You should be thinking of Michael & The Strange Land. The trio started playing together in March of this year and tomorrow night (August 28th), they’ll be having a big ol’ party at The Fortress in San Francisco to celebrate the release of their first EP, Strange Land. They’ve got a dark and luscious surf beat sound intermingled with the undertones of a post-punk apocalypse. Think Joy Division meets The B-52’s with less crazy bouffant hair and a lot more reverb.

The mastermind behind most of the tune-age, Michael Taras, is involved with acts like Sam Flax and Shock. Creepy and almost ghostlike vocals echo over the powerful and punchy four track EP. Delicately tied with ribbons of mind-bending psychedelic tones, “Time Wave” takes you through a spiraling dark journey. “Sail” has that double snare surf beat and twangy demented surf guitar throughout that could potentially become the theme song to the next beach party horror movie if the right person gets a listen. Damn right spooky, ya’ll!

Michael & The Strange Land have self-released the EP on cassette that you can snag at one of their upcoming shows or on their bandcamp. Later on, they plan to release the EP proper on a label still to be determined. In the meantime, check out the tracks and get swept up into this monstrous swell.
