The Circus Kids // The Circus Kids

Recommended Track: Sky the Clown
The Circus Kids by “The Circus Kids” is a well produced collection of songs, leading me to doubt the veracity of their claim to lo-fi.
They begin their self-titled album with a chintzy organ riff ripped off of an ice cream truck and only get worse from there, evoking a melange early 2000′s twee pop punk run through the digestive tract of Avril Lavigne, finishing in a fetid elephant turd complete with horrifyingly bad carnival-barker interludes, songs about popcorn and cotton candy, and endless verses that make three minute songs feel like waiting in line at the DMV. Something so homogenized, bland and wearisome could only come out of Orange County.
The interlude “Over The Jumps” is bearable, a nice little break in the ride on the merry-go-round in your favorite OC mall. “Sky The Clown” shows some nice dreamy guitar work after you sit through a minute of botched accordion bumbling, but the fully realized songs are empty gestures born out of lobotomized strip mall waste. Transmitting nothing, signifying nothing, existing only to propagate animal abuse and sell unhealthy food, Circus Kids’s self titled album is truly a gaze into the abyss.
