Bobby T. and the Slackers are the band that you might know about. You may have seen their name on a DIY fest flyer and kind of wanted to check them out. But, trust me, you will hear more from these dudes in weeks, months and, hopefully, years to come.
Formed in 2013, they are not necessarily the newest band on the scene, but they are still pretty young. Their early recordings and demos are catchy as fuck. And, shocker, they do NOT rely on fuzz guitar or psychedelia influences to fit in with the now crumbling SoCal trends. It’s just a bunch of hook-laden rock ‘n’ roll songs waiting to be heard by whoever is a part of this little bubble we call the underground LA music scene, and soon enough the general public.
Unlike early Bobby T. and the Slackers material, which offers more of an abrasive approach to pop (not unlike early Strokes material), their new track “TV Shows” slips into a more wavy world of dreams.
The tune starts out mellow and almost monotone then uplifts with a melodic statement, “I’ve seen those TV Shows, I just wanted something more.” It then collapses into a prominent yet droned-out riff that coats the rhythm guitar like a glob of honey on a sore throat. While it’s not as in-your-face as their other songs, this new one is still just as catchy and easy to groove along with.
Their next promoted gig is Dirty Laundry’s Summer Fest at the Satellite on June 21st. But, hey. Maybe more house shows or smaller shows will pop up from now until then. Fingers crossed, dudes.
